This is an image belonging to what we can consider a chapter of twentieth-century Italian publishing: the “Albi di Novissima” and the “Quaderni di Novissima”, created by the Florentine entrepreneur Edoardo de Fonseca and his son Giorgio. In 1901, Edoardo founded the precious annual magazine “Novissima. Albo d'Arti e Lettere” which published texts and illustrations by many famous writers such as Pascoli, Giacosa, De Amicis, Martini, Capuana, Marradi, Di Giacomo, Rovetta, Fucini, Ricci, Biagi, Gargàno, Sodini, Rasi, and painters such as Giorgio Kienerk, Aleardo Terzi, Duilio Cambellotti, Plinio Nomellini, Metlicovitz or Hohenstein for example, while Giorgio, in the 1930s, created, in collaboration with the famous poet Giuseppe Ungaretti and the journalist Rafaele Contu, an important book series called “Quaderni di Novissima”. This collection contains numerous works by important Italian and foreign writers.
