Tot 26-32mm, Ab 22-25mm, Hw 16-20mm.\nA small version of Large Redeye and also likely to be seen on floating vegetation Although it has a more southerly distribution than that species, its range has expanded rapidly to the N recently Numbers peak a month later than Large Redeye, coinciding with the growth of pondweed at the surface.\nIdentification: Like Large Redeye, both sexes lack pale spots behind the eyes and have pale brown wing-spots and two black lines on side of thorax, the upper one short; wings reach no more than halfway along S7.\n♂ Eyes brownish-red; thorax bronzy-black on top with blue side; pale shoulder stripes complete or reduced; abdomen dark except for blue on the top of S1, S9–10 and the sides of S2–3 and S8; black ‘X’-shape on top of S10; tip of abdomen often upcurved.\n♀ Eyes brown above, greenish below; shoulder stripes complete and, like side of thorax, are yellow, green or blue; abdomen similar to that of Large Redeye, except that top of S10 is pale (blue, green or yellow), extending forward just onto top and side of S9; rear edge of pronotum is rounded. Females may become\nlightly pruinose.\nBehaviour: Mating occurs either on floating plants or at the margins. When perched on floating vegetation, males hold their abdomen slightly upcurved (usually straight in Large Redeye).\nEggs are laid, while in tandem, into floating plants.\nBreeding habitat: Frequents a range of standing and sometimes slow-flowing waters with floating mats of pondweed, particularly hornworts (Ceratophyllum spp.) or water-milfoils (Myriophyllum spp.); sometimes on lily-pads with Large Redeye. Tolerates brackish conditions.\nFlight Season: From May to September in the South, but mainly in July and August in the North.\nOccurrence: Central Europe (incl. Mediterranean). Expending Northwards and South-East England.\n\nThis is a common Species in the Netherlands on the described Habitats.
