Identification:\nTot 57-66mm, Ab 39-49mm, Hw 37-42mm.\nIn flight often confused with the related and similar small A. mixta. Ranges less far north, but also migratory and may be invasive in good summers.\nMales are often observed when making low patrols over drying wetlands, showing their noticeable bright colors. The males vivid blue eyes and abdomen and largely green thorax sides are especially distinctive.\nHabitat: Prefers standing waters that dry up over the course of Summer, often overgrown with low rushes, bulrushes or reeds.\nFlight Season: On average, emerges earlier than A. mixta. Seen mainly from May to August, especially in the later months.\nDistribution: Seldom abundant, and only permanently present around the Mediterranean, but scarce in much of Iberia and North Africa. Hot summer weather may lead to influxes further north. Occurs east to Mongolia.\n\nThis Picture is made in a Fen area in Flevoland in half August 2022 by high Summer temperatures.

The black-winged dragonfly belongs to the family of dragonflies, and is a very primitive insect. It is distributed in Henan, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Fujian, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Guangxi, etc. The face is dark and hairy. Except for the slightly lighter base color of the front lip, the rest of the body and the top of the head are all blue-green or blue-brown with a metallic luster. The back of the head is brown, with hair on the rear edge. The prothorax is black. The front of the sternum is blue-green with thick hair, and the side of the sternum is dark green with sparse hair. Most of the wings are black with blue-green flashes, and a small part is transparent. The hind wings are black; the area from the wing base to the wing knot and the end of the elbow vein of the forewing is black, with a small black spot at the end of the wing, and the rest is transparent and colorless. The legs are black. The abdomen and anal appendages are all black [1].

Tot 32-39mm, Ab 23-27mm, Hw 30-33mm.\nThe largest whiteface and the prevailing one in many lowland and more eutrophic areas, although almost always very local. The conspicuous yellow spot on S7 identifies males and most females through binoculars.\nOccurrence:\nGenerally uncommon; populations are usually local and small. The most thermophilus Leucorrhinia, with a relative southern range.\nHabitat:\nGenerally inhabits less acidic and nutrient poor places than L. dubia and L. rubicunda, preferring marshy borders to bogs, forest lakes, fenlands, marshy ditches.\nVegetation is typically lush and varied, with both emergent and submerged species. The water is frequently mesotrophic and often colored brown due to peat.\nFlight Season:\nFrom early May to early August, with most records in late May and June.\n\nThis Picture is made in the Wieden (Overijssel, the Netherlands) in mid June of 2023.
