A close-up of a dragonfly
In this macro photograph, a dragonfly has just molted, leaving behind its old exoskeleton, and now stands on a surface resembling textured rock. Behind it, a black background isolates the subject.\n\nThe entire body of the animal is visible and it is looking straight to the camera.
Tot 50-55mm, Ab, 37-42mm, Hw 30-35mm.\nIdentification:\nThe characters of this clubtail are rather different . It prefers very large (lowland) rivers and may easily be overlooked. Populations can best be found by searching for exuviae on river banks.\nOccurrence:\nA north Asian species, with western outposts in large rivers such as the Rhine, Loire and Po. Common in large lowland rivers in eastern Europe, but staged a strong comeback in Western Europe in the 1990s. Now abundant in rivers such as the Rhine, Elbe and Danube, right down to their estuaries.\nHabitat:\nSlow flowing lower sections of large rivers with sandy beds. Larvae burrow shallowly in fine substrates with relatively high concentrations of organic matter.\nFlight Season:\nLate and protracted, compared with other Gomphus species, from early June to early October, with maximum emergence in June and July.\n\nThis is a scarce Gomphus Species along the large Dutch Rivers. This Picture is made along the River Waal, near “Slot Loevestein” in the Province of Gelderland.

Both sexes of the Four-spotted chaser are golden-brown, getting darker towards the tip of the body, and with yellow spots along the sides. Two dark spots at the front edge of each wing give this dragonfly its name and an easily recognisable appearance.
Arriving on the scene around 300 million years ago, dragonflies were one of the first insects to inhabit this planet. They've had a long time to perfect the art of flying, hunting and just being amazing.
Tot 35-44mm, Ab 20-30mm, Hw 24-30mm.\nOne of the larger Sympetrum species. In the field, males may be noticed because they seldom become as deeply red as other species and have a rather parallel-sided abdomen.\nHabitat: Wide range of places, especially preferring warm, stagnant waters. These are often shallow and bare, this species being a pioneer of newly created ponds. Occasionally in flowing or brackish water.\nFlight Season: May be seen all year in the Mediterranean. In Northern Europe, appears from early June, becoming abundant in July and flying into November. One of the last dragonflies to be encountered in autumn.\nDistribution: Common in most of our area, becoming less common relative to S. vulgatum in a north-easterly direction. Extends to Japan. Migrations are often seen and are sometimes massive.\n\nThis is a common Species in the Netherlands.
