The Jack in the Pulpit can be found growing in the forest in moist soil near streams.
Arisaema ringens, commonly called cobra lily, is a tuberous perennial that is native to Japan. Each tuber produces a single stalk containing two glossy green trifoliate leaves, with each leaf having three leaflets. From the center of the leaf stalks rises a cobra-like flower in spring. Each flower consists of a showy, green and purple striped spathe with a hood that covers the inner yellow to white flower spike known as the spadix. Stalks, leaves, flowers and fruits give this plant a tropical aura. Plants go dormant in summer after flowering, except hermaphroditic flowering plants, which will produce a cluster of red berries in late summer and autumn which become visible as the spathe withers. \n(From “Missouri Botanical Garden>Plant Finder”)
Native hardy northern plant. It is a large, cylindrical, hooded flower, green in color with brown stripes.
Eastern skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus) with emerging leaves, early spring in a Connecticut swamp. The hoodlike spathe hides the spadix, a fleshy knob of flowers without petals. The bright-green leaves will unfurl and grow very large. The first spring wildflower in this region, skunk cabbage is abundant and takes strange forms.
The Aronstab is a European poisonous plant. It grows especially in deciduous forests on moist soils. The plant blooms between April and May.

Common Midwestern Jack in the Pulpit or Indian Turnip
Cobra plant, also called Darlingtonia Californica and California pitcher, is the only species of the genus Darlingtonia of the New World pitcher plant (Sarraceniaceae). The cobra plant is native to swamps in mountain areas of northern California and southern Oregon and uses its carnivorous pitfall traps to supplement its nutritional requirements in poor soil conditions. The plant’s hooded pitcher₋like leaves resemble striking cobras and bear purple-red appendages that look similar to a snake’s forked tongue or a set of fangs.
