The Sugar Bush (Protea caffra) is the most widely distributed protea species of Southern Africa, growing on rocky ridges in the Afromontane grasslands.

Protea cynaroides, also called King Protea, is a sparsely branched evergreen shrub, prized for its huge bowl-shaped flower heads. Each spectacular flower head features a central bouquet of inner flowers surrounded by stiff, pointed, colorful bracts. Their color ranges from greenish white through silky silvery pink to red. In its native habitat, King Protea blooms primarily in warmer months, but sporadically throughout the year.
