Vientiane, Laos: Patuxai (literally Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph) - Patuxai was built in the 1960s to a design by Tham Sayasthsena, as a “Monument to the Heroes of the Royal Army”, celebrating Laos' independence from France (1949). It was popularly known simply as Anousavali (monument) or in French as the 'Monument Aux Morts'. In 1995, on the 20th anniversary of the seizure of power by the communists of Pathet Lao, the triumphal arch was given the new dedication to “The Heroes of August 23, 1975” (Day of the Communist seizure of power in Vientiane).

The exterior of the gate is decorated with traditional Laotian motifs, including Buddhist symbols, Hindu deities and apsaras.

$Vientiane, Laos.\nThe Patuxay is 45 meters high and 24 meters wide. It is located in the center of Vientiane, near the Prime Minister's Office. Construction began in 1960 and was largely completed in 1969. It looks like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France, from a distance, but on the base of its arch are typical Lao temple carvings and decorations, exquisite carvings full of Buddhist colors, showing the traditional national culture and art of Laos.$
