Octopus with starfish
Nautilus in a large marine aquarium at a popular oceanarium
Veined Octopus or Coconut Octopus Amphioctopus marginatus (ex. Octopus marginatus) occurs in temperate and tropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific in a depth range from 0 to 190 m, max. length 30cm, mantle length 10cm, max. weigth 400g. \n\nThe Veined Octopus can bury itself in sand or mud. They also exhibit a curious behaviour adaption of using discarded clam shells and halves of coconut shells for protection. Sandy and muddy habitats the octopus inhabits leave itself little protection from passing predators. \n\nDiscarded halves of coconut shells are common in waters near human settlements throughout Indonesia. When two halves fit together, the halves make a perfect refuge difficult for predators to open. \n\nAmphioctopus marginatus lays up to 100 000 small eggs which hatch into tiny planktonic young. These young are carried in ocean currents, accounting for its wide distribution. \n\nThis specimen was encountered in the Lembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°28'56.3943 N 125°15'15.59 E at 15m depth
