Blue Spotted Sea Urchin Astropyga radiata occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean from the African coast to Australia and to Hawaii in a depth range from 0 to 60m, usually 10 to 30m, max. test diameter 20cm. \nThe species is often found in lagoons and bays where the substrate is sand, shingle or coral rubble. Sometimes many urchins collect together in one locality in dense aggregations. \nAstropyga radiata is mostly nocturnal and feeds by grazing on algae. The mouth is at the centre of the oral (under) surface where there are five powerful teeth.\nThis urchin is light sensitive and can angle its spines towards an approaching threatening object, but rather than centralized eyes, Astropyga radiata has a distributed sensory system. Funny thing is that many people think the thing in the middle is the eyeball, but it is the rectum. \nThe sexes are separate in Astropyga radiata. Eggs and sperm are liberated into the water column. After fertilisation, the larvae are planktonic and develop through several stages before settling on the seabed. \nLembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°27'13.104 N 125°14'14.634 E at 12m depth

Asthenosoma varium is a large urchin (25 cm) with flattened, flexible test (the plates are articulated rather than fused). Very mobile, short spines, arranged in rectangular areas, separated by spineless areas. Spines have a blue swelling close to the tip, filled with venom.Living in bay, lagoon, external reef; on sandy or rubble bottoms. The flexible test allows, changing the shape, to enter very narrow crevices. The swollen shape of the spines and the flexible test are unique features. \nAsthenosoma varium sting can be very painful, a strong local pain due to venom injection can last for hours.\nThis specimen was encountered in a very shallow tunnel in the Triton Bay, Indonesia \n3°54'51.39 S 134°7'24.81 E at 2m depth

The Urchin Cardinalfish (Siphamia fuscolineata) is a small but striking species of fish commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region. They have a slender body with a distinct black stripe running from the eye to the tail, and a vibrant red coloration on their fins and tail. As their name suggests, they are often found living among the spines of sea urchins, using them as a natural shelter. They are also known to form schools and are popular among aquarium enthusiasts due to their unique appearance.
