$Mandarin fishes inhabit shallow protected lagoons and inshore reefs. They occur in the Western Pacific from Ryukyu Islands to Australia, usually in small groups spread over small area in a depth range from 1-18m, max. size 7cm. \nMandarinfish do not have scales, but a mucus layer for protection. It is not only a stinky slime they produce, but they also secrete a toxin to protect them against predators. Their dramatic colouration, known as aposematism, is a warning: unpalatability and toxicity - both prey and predator get to live longer. \n\nThis specimen was encountered in the Lembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°27'34.836 N 125°13'17.046 E at 4m depth by night$

$The sea life at Little Manuk, a so called rocky islet, is very interesting. Bubbles escape through the sand and rocks in places. Apparently there is still some volcanic activity. In the shallow areas there are slopes with black sand and tumbled rocks covered by algal turf and small hard corals, including large rocks with attached table Acropora between four and five metres depth. Hard coralc cover almost 80% and the stress resistance, recovery, and overall reef health and resilience potentials of this coral community are all high. \n\nA large Barrel Sponge Xestospongia testudinaria at the left, an impressing variety of coral genera and species, many fish spies as wrasses, damselfishes, Soldiers, Surgeons are there, Hydroids, Zoanthids, Tunicates the biodiversity is high. \n\nLittle Manuk near Tayandu Island, Indonesia \n5°28'6.876 S 132°15'26.808 E at 19m depth$

The Red Sea is a rich and diverse ecosystem. More than 1200 species of fish have been recorded in the Red Sea, and around 10% of these are found nowhere else. This also includes 42 species of deepwater fish. The rich diversity is in part due to the 2,000 km (1,240 mi) of coral reef extending along its coastline; these fringing reefs are 5000–7000 years old and are largely formed of stony acropora and porites corals. The reefs form platforms and sometimes lagoons along the coast and occasional other features such as cylinders (such as the Blue Hole (Red Sea) at Dahab). These coastal reefs are also visited by pelagic species of Red Sea fish, including some of the 44 species of shark.
